Abstract

Abstract: India is a developing country having 1210 million population (Census of India, 2011) and 455 million population are migrants. And among migrants 146 million are male and 309 million are female migrants. Various studies shows that the number of migrants varies with age, sex and reasons for migration. The study aimed to understand the age patterns of migration and reasons for migration in different age groups among male and female in India. The study is based on the Census of India 2011, migration tables (D-4, D-5 and D-6), based on Place of Last Residence (POLR) data and the analysis is done based on computation of rate and ratios. Based on the analysis, it was found that the number of migrants starts rapid increase from the age group 20 to 25 and it reaches at peak between age group 25 to 29 and after age group 30 to 35 the number of migrants starts declining for both male and female. It was also observed for female that the percentage of female migrants (9.4%) was reached at peak between age group 25 to 29 and marriage was the main reasons for migration, while 35 to 39 age group was the peak percentage of migrants for male migrants and work and employment was the main reasons for male migration. The findings of this study might be useful for readers to understand the age patterns of migration in the context of India.
