Its time to reform in USA, the Nation of Immigrants

Published Date:   Thursday, Apr 11, 2013

Thousands of people in different parts of the United States of America are coming to the street to participate in the protest for immigration reform. USA which is the country of immigrants has about eleven million immigrants currently residing without having citizenship status.

Zuckerberg, the founder of facebook is one of the advocate of the immigration reform and granting citizenship. "Attract the most talented, hardest-working people, no matter where they were born”. Perhaps United States of America is today achieved its status economically as well as politically due to the sacrifice of the immigrants. No doubt immigrants are most entrepreneurial and hard working. No wise country wishes to lose them. However, the situation is not always determined by what is desirable. Zuckerberg is not alone; he is supported by many entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley including Yahoo's Marissa Mayer and, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt.

The economic and political interests have often clashes with each other. While politics cannot be separated from the vote back and the local interest, economic interest in the globalised world have different interest. It does not see everything in terms race, ethnic and communal prejudices.

Granting citizenship is however comes with legal entitlement and the challenge for a county to provide necessary arrangements at every level. Any reform to be sustainable needs consultation with stakeholders including the citizens of the country, economic players and the immigrants. Nation must come to term with the inevitable international migration. Immigration not only promote nations diversity, it also promote better understanding among people, promote creativity and prosperity. The reform will definitely favour the high skilled migrants rather than any other consideration including the family unification. The plan is a very complex  one, it would grant citizenship to only those who have waited for more than 13 years. The reform will help in checking the human trafficking and immigration related problems to a large extent.
