Abstract
This paper provides an overview of integration , assimilation and identity formation of the Indian diaspora in the wider Caribbean . Starting point is the historical origin of the Indian diaspora society in the Caraibbean area though indentured labour. The descendants of the Indian immigrants remain vulnerable in a social order that not reflected their culture identity. They face the dual challenge of integration into their host countries and maintaining ties with their families , identities network relationships and assistance s.In most of the Caribbean islandswith the exception of Suriname the descendants haslost their culture – and ethnic identification. The paper also focusses the Indian identity formation in Suriname by heritage, symbols, audio-visual media, Muslim - Hindoe holidays, enculturation and identification with geographical place names.
