Indian Diaspora during Covid 19: Coping Strategies and Future Prospects

Indian Diaspora spread around more than 100 countries. They are ethnic minority in many countries and majority in many countries. There are diversity of challenge as Indian diaspora is itself diverse in terms of language, region, class, caste, destination countries etc. This Panel discussion brought together many scholars and activists from many countries will thrrow light upon the challenges faced by Indian diaspora during Covid 19.

Prof. Chandrashekhar Bhat has been a Professor of Eminence at Department of Sociology, Tezpur Central University till 2014.  He was a Professor and Head, Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad and the Founder-Director of the Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora, the first UGC sponsored academic and research centre, established in 1996 at the University of Hyderabad. He has published several papers on social movements, urbanization and   diaspora studies in various journals and edited books, besides three books on migration, ethnicity and development 

Mr. Deo Gosine born in Trinidad. He is an engineer by profession and currently president of Amatech Corp. Mr. Gosine is a founder trustee of Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, Queens, New York. He has served on the Advisory Committee to the NYC comptroller and the Elemhurst Economic Development Committee. Mr. Gosine is currently president of Lions International, Elemhurst New York. He is active in promoting Indo-Caribbean Interest.

Prof. Mohan K. Gautam, M.A. (Lucknow), D. Lit (Leiden) has taught at the universities of Lucknow (India), Oslo (Norway) and Leiden (The Netherlands). Since 70 he is Organizer and Chairman of the International commission on Museums and Cultural Heritage of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Since 1962 he is working as a member of staff in Kern institute of South Asian Studies, Leiden University, Leiden.  

Dr Arnold Thomas is a retired diplomat who was based at the Embassy of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States in Brussels. He  also worked for several years at the Caribbean Community Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana and has taught  Political Science and History at Brooklyn College,(New York(, Thames Valley University (UK) among others. He is a founding member of the St.VIncent and the Grenadines (SVG) Indian Heritage Foundation and currently the IDC Coordinator of SVG. 

Dr Satish Rai is Sydney based academic, film/tv producer, journalist and community development worker. He was born in Fiji where he received his primary, secondary and part of his tertiary education (University of South Pacific & Fiji School of Medicine. Dr Rai is now working on a feature film on the abolition of girmit as well as international events to mark the 100th anniversary of the abolition of the Indian indenture system (girmit)

Dr Vishnu Bisram was born in Guyana where he received his formative education. He migrated to New York to pursue higher education enrolling for BS in Biochemistry. He pursued post graduate studies in International Relations and Educational Administration earning multiple doctorates. He has taught for 35 years. He is a specialist in Indian diaspora issues. And he is a journalist and columnist for several publications.  

Vikash Ramkisson, Historian, Guyana.

Mehen Poinoosawmy is an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card holder born in Mauritius. He has done his studies in India at the University of Delhi (Master in Maths), then went to France where he has done his Engineering in IT at the University of Paris. He is GOPIO International Coordinator for EUROPE region.
