Free Human movement is necessary for the success of 2030 SDG: Dr. A. Didar Singh

A multi stakeholder Round Table Discussion on Mainstreaming Migration organised by ILO, FICCI, IOM at FICCI Federation House, New Delhi on 30 August 2016 to discuss on the issue of migration vis a vis 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Agenda. The 2030 SDG is an ambitious and broad range of plan of action adopted by 193 UN members. One of the key areas is related to “migration”. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. A. Didar Singh, Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), mentioned that globalisation is not a new phenomenon, rather it is happening since 5000 years. One of the key drivers of this globalisation has always been “human movement”. However, the intensity of globalisation and human movement has grown last few decades. He said Interdependence is most important of today’s globalised world. No company, no country, no institution can work in isolation. This interdependence means Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
Dr. Singh cautioned that in recent times especially since 2009, the capital flow between nations, human movements, good and services has been slowed down. This is not a very good sign for SDG. He advocated for the reasonable free movement of human capital as it is important for capital formation, economic growth and subsequently leading to the success of SDG.
Dr. Singh said that one of the reasons why Millennium Development Goal (MDG) was not successful was because the component of “migration” was missing in its agenda. Therefore, the 2030 SDG must take “migration” as mainstream agenda rather than keeping it as peripheral agenda. In the end, he said that Business always encourage “human mobility” as it believes that human mobility brings competition, economic growth and development.
